Trump’s Coast Guard commencement speech: “No politician in history” has been treated so “unfairly”

On Wednesday President Trump delivered a commencement address to the Coast Guard Academy and quickly pivoted to talking about himself, his agenda and of course — bashing the media. The president told college graduates to brush off the haters during his first public appearance since it was reported that he allegedly told the former FBI Director James Comey to close the investigation into Michael Flynn, his former national security adviser.

“Look at the way I’ve been treated lately . . . especially by the media,” Trump said, while talking about overcoming adversity. “No politician in history, and I say this with great surety, has been treated worse or more unfairly.” The president told the college graduates that “you can’t let the critics and the naysayers get in the way of your dreams, I guess that’s why we won.”

Trump explained to the Coast Guard graduates that life isn’t always fair, but it doesn’t mean that one should give up. “Over the course of your life, you will find that things are not always fair. You will find that things happen to you that you do not deserve and that are not always warranted, but you have to put your head down and fight, fight, fight. Never ever ever give up. Things will work out just fine.”

The speech comes as Trump’s White House is in a downward spiral of contradictions and being blindsided by rogue tweets from the president. But Trump said in his speech that “adversity makes you stronger.”

“Adversity makes you stronger. Don’t give in. Don’t back down and never stop doing what you know is right. Nothing worth doing ever, ever, ever came easy. And the more righteous your fight, the most opposition you will face.”
